USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH, At Sea (NNS) -- USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) conducted an ammunition onload with USNS William McLean (T-AKE-12), Jan. 15-16.
The onload is the first of two that will prepare George H.W. Bush for the ship's upcoming deployment and incorporate the simultaneous execution of a connected replenishment and a vertical replenishment. In total, approximately 814 lifts totaling more than 2.6 million pounds of ordnance worth more than $70.9 million was transferred throughout the operation.
'It is scheduled as a two-day event but this takes months to plan,' said Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Chris Morrison, Ordnance Control leading chief petty officer. 'It's one of the biggest evolutions a ship can do; you only really get one shot to make it work.'
George H.W. Bush is scheduled for another ammunition onload during the 2013 work-up cycle before a regularly scheduled deployment.
'This will get us pretty close to our allowance for Mission and Ship fill,' said Fowler. 'We'll be ready to put the ship into the wind to wherever our leaders deem our warfighting punch needs delivering.'
George H.W. Bush is conducting training and carrier qualifications in the Atlantic Ocean.
