WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (NNS) -- Participants completed the first part of Operation Trident Arch Jan. 14 at Naval Weapons Stations Yorktown-Cheatham Annex is complete.

Trident Arch is a Navy Expeditionary Medical Support Command (NEMSCOM) operation that rotates Deployable Medical Systems (DEPMEDS) from prepositioned storage sites world-wide, ashore and afloat for service life extension.

The NEMSCOM team of military, civilian and contracted personnel design and build standardized, modular, scalable, expeditionary and fully functional medical facilities that can be packed-up and deployed anywhere in the world.

Trident Arch enables NEMSCOM to upgrade and retrofit prepositioned hospitals and medical facilities with certified extended life services.

This Trident Arch Operation is the largest ever done by NEMSCOM. This year NEMSCOM is rotating four DEPMEDS to three different preposition sites. A normal Trident Arch would only see the rotation of one DEPMEDS. This operation has been dubbed "Super" Trident Arch.

As part of Super Trident Arch 2013, 638 containers making up one 10-bed and four 150-bed DEPMEDS, along with 360 pieces of Civil Engineering Support Equipment (CESE) were loaded onto the cargo ship M/V Black Eagle, for deliveries in Japan and Korea.

Super Trident Arch will conclude April 2013 when M/V Black Eagle returns with the DEPMEDS and CESE rotated out for maintenance and retrofitting.

"These containerized DEPMEDS will rotate to our prepositioned storage sites within the Pacific Command and can accommodate 150 patient beds and 123 units of supporting equipment," said Construction Mechanic 1st Class David Griggs, NEMSCOM operations stow plan coordinator.

The mission of NEMSCOM is to plan and execute the design, acquisition, assembly, integration, storage, shipment, maintenance, and life-cycle support of DEPMEDS and act as a technical advisor for deployment of these assets.

Fifty-six Sailors from Navy Cargo Handling Battalion ONE (NCHB 1), Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) worked with 44 soldiers from the U.S. Army 149th Seaport Operations Company (SOC), 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, from Fort Eustis, Va., to load the M/V Black Eagle.

"We are tasked to control the route and transport of containers from the NEMSCOM marshaling yard to pier side. We also provided drivers to operate and transport all the rolling stock," said 2nd Lt. Danny Ferucci, officer in charge, 149th SOC.

"This operation is the best training opportunity for my Sailors to enhance their qualification in cargo handling," said Boatswain's Mate 1st Class Luis Benavente, hatch captain from NCHB 1. "Hands-on experience still is the best training we can get from this evolution."

In addition to shipboard cargo handling, NCHB 1 augmented 14 tractor trailer drivers to support Super Trident Arch to ensure the ship's sail time.

"We consider this as a real-world training evolution that allows our stevedore and crane operators to gain experience and aim for their next level of cargo handling qualification," said Chief Construction Mechanic Michael Prados, officer in charge, NCHB 1 Trident Arch detachment.

NCHB 1 is the active duty, rapid deployable unit of Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG). NAVELSG delivers expeditionary logistics capabilities with mobilization-ready Navy Reserve Forces and active-duty Sailors. NAVELSG provides a wide range of supply and transportation functions critical for peacekeeping, crisis response, humanitarian, and combat service support missions. NAVELSG is part of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, a global force provider of adaptive force packages with expeditionary capabilities to joint warfighting commanders.
