SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106) departed for a Western Pacific deployment with the Nimitz Strike Group Surface Action Group (SAG) Jan. 14.

San Diego-based USS Higgins (DDG 76) and USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110) also deployed with the SAG.

"We are excited about getting underway," said Cmdr. Fredrick W. Kacher, Stockdale's commanding officer. "The crew has worked diligently to prepare and we are confident that we will go out and successfully complete our mission."

The SAG will focus on maritime security in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility while maintaining theater security cooperation efforts to help establish stability within the region.

This is Stockdale's second deployment since the ship's commissioning in 2009.

"The hardest part is definitely leaving my family, but I am excited to get underway and get the job done," said Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Chace Bee, assigned to Stockdale.

The three San Diego-based guided-missile destroyers will join the deployed Everett, Wash.-based USS Shoup (DDG 86).

In Nov. 2012, the Navy announced a deployment delay for the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) due to a maintenance requirement. Nimitz's delay did not affect the Nimitz Strike Group SAG deployment.
