BANGOR, Wash. (NNS) -- Two Commander, Submarine Group 9 submarines, Trident ballistic missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) and guided-missile submarine USS Ohio (SSGN 726), were recognized Jan. 1 by Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet as recipients of the 2012 Battle Efficiency Award (Battle 'E').
Maine's Blue and Gold crews received the Battle 'E' for Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 17, while Ohio's Blue Crew was awarded the Battle 'E' for Submarine Squadron 19.
This is Maine's first Battle 'E' award since 2007 and Ohio's first since 2009.
Maine also won the Engineering Readiness Red 'E' and Supply Readiness Blue 'E' in the Battle 'E' competitive areas.
'I'm proud of the outstanding crew I am fortunate enough to command, and I'm proud of the successes they have had,' said Maine Blue Crew Commanding Officer Cmdr. William Johnson.
'I know they work hard, and I'm happy to see them recognized. However, I also acknowledge that the award is for 2012 - last year. We have a very busy and challenging 2013 ahead of us, and like the stock market, past performance does not predict future success. We must continue to work hard and strive to improve to ensure Maine continues to perform her mission well,' he said.
Ohio's Blue Crew Commanding Officer Capt. George Norman, who took command in December after the crew returned from deployment, said he is proud of the team he has going forward.
'Winning the Squadron 19 Battle Efficiency Award is a great honor for the crew and is a direct result of all the hard work and dedication of all crewmembers over an extended period of time,' said Norman. 'I am extremely proud of each and every one of the crew of USS Ohio and proud to be a part of such and accomplished team.'
The Battle 'E' is an award of merit presented to the most proficient submarine crew in each squadron and recognizes sustained superior technical performance and continual combat readiness throughout the year. The awards are presented by the commodore of each squadron to the submarine under their command which has demonstrated the highest level of battle readiness during the evaluation year.
