OSCE Observers Monitoring American Vote

November 06, 2012

by RFE/RL

WASHINGTON -- Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe have joined American monitors to observe the U.S. elections.

Joao Soares, head of the OSCE's parliamentary mission, told RFE/RL at a Washington polling station that the 100-strong team has observers in all "swing states," states where polls have indicated a close contest between President Barack Obama and Republican Party challenger Mitt Romney.

The OSCE's human rights office has a separate 50-member monitoring team.

Soares said the observers show that the OSCE does not have double standards for Western countries and is monitoring the American elections as it does in countries of the former Soviet Union.

The OSCE is expected to present its observations on the U.S. vote later this week.
