Afghan Clash Leaves 25 Taliban, 5 Police Dead

October 25, 2012

SHEBERGHAN, Afghanistan -- Officials in Afghanistan's Faryab Province say 25 Taliban fighters, including a senior commander, and five police were killed in a gun battle.

Faryab Governor Abdullah Botash said a large group of Taliban seized control of the Mayan Dara Bazaar for about two hours on October 25 before security forces rushed to the scene.

In the ensuing battle, they reportedly killed the Taliban's shadow governor for Faryab, Yaar Muhammad, and 24 other members of his group.

Deputy Faryab Governor Abdul Satar Barez said the attack was carried out by the "brutal enemies of Afghanistan."

Two civilians were also killed, reportedly after being accused of collaborating with the government, during the brief period that the Taliban fighters controlled the bazaar.
