SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Filanc-Orion Joint Venture of Escondido a $57.3 million contract Sept. 28, for the design and construction of a potable water conveyance line at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Pendleton.

The new conveyance line will be constructed as a connection to the new advanced water treatment plant in the northern part of the base and convey the treated potable water to the southern parts of the base. By connecting the northern water system and the existing southern potable water systems, the project will add flexibility in meeting the base potable water needs and help prevent water shortages in the event of an emergency.

"By expanding the base's access to the water resources, this will offer a safety net protection to the base, its inhabitants, and the surrounding communities in the case of a wildfire or life-threatening emergencies such as an earthquake," said Elizabeth Puorro, NAVFAC Southwest project manager for this project. "In addition, it was a pleasure to be a part of a project that will also have a positive impact on the quality of the lives of the Marines, their families and civilians on the base."

The project will include the construction of new pumping stations with distributing piping extensions to supply treated potable water from the northern advanced water treatment plant to an existing reservoir in the 43 Area off Las Pulgas Road, and a new three million gallon potable water reservoir to be constructed in the Wire Mountain Housing area. The pipeline will also convey water to the 21 Area of the base and allow for future connections to various points along the line to supply water to various areas on MCB Camp Pendleton including the new naval hospital.

"This project presented a great opportunity for our team to be a part of a project that will improve the quality of the base to expand and make improvements to their existing base infrastructure water system," said Puorro.

Work will be performed in Oceanside. NAVFAC Southwest is the contracting activity.
