PORT KLANG, Malaysia (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) opened its bay doors to the armed forces of Malaysia Oct. 9.

The Malaysian military came aboard George Washington for the first time to see the ship and its crew at work during their brief port visit.

The Malaysian National Defense Academy took photos together in the hangar bay and flight deck, and learned how forward-deployed operations are conducted.

"I think the ship is amazing," said Officer Cadet Mohd Jazrin. "This is my first time aboard an aircraft carrier and it's not easy to imagine what it might be like since we don't get to see one very often."

The officer cadets both male and female between the ages of 18 to 21, asked questions about aircraft, the launching and recovery system, where the ship has been and what life aboard the ship is like. The cadet's instructors said this as a great learning opportunity.

"It is good exposure for the cadets to see the latest technology of the military," said Superintendant of Customs Gordon Mizusawa. "They can apply this to their learning and training."

This is the first time George Washington has visited Malaysia since relieving the now decommissioned USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) in 2008.

George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its partners and allies in the Asia-Pacific region.
