NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic awarded a $13.3 million contract for repairs to a barracks at the Naval Submarine School at Naval Submarine Base New London to Nutmeg Industries, Sept. 27.
According to Roger Schalge, project manager at NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic Northeast Integrated Product Team, the repairs to the plumbing and HVAC in Bachelor Quarters 534 will enable students to once again utilize the building that was taken out of service in 2009.
"This project will improve the way students work and live here at the submarine base," he said. "It will not only greatly improve this building, but will improve the quality of life and decrease the load on the existing 'A' School barracks."
He added that the project will include repair of the HVAC system, replacement of windows and doors, repair of the electrical distribution system, lighting, and many other repairs to systems and structures of the building inside and out that will increase the energy efficiency of the building, meeting or exceeding established Department of Defense standards.
Sailors at the school will also have expanded laundry and recreation facilities along with aesthetic improvements throughout.
The project is expected to be completed in April 2014.
