Taipei, Sept. 27 (CNA) There is no ready resolution to the territorial dispute between China, Taiwan and Japan over the Diaoyutai Islands, but a consensus is taking shape among the concerned parties that they should engage in dialogue rather than confrontation, Tsai De-sheng, the chief of the National Security Bureau, said Thursday.
Fielding questions from lawmakers at the Legislative Yuan, the national security chief said no resolution is in sight, and it serves the interest of no party if the dispute spins out of control.
There is a common feeling among the concerned parties that they should talk rather than square off against one another over the dispute, Tsai said.
With regard to the U.S.' security policy in Asia, Tsai said Washington intends to work together with influential Asian states to counterbalance the growing might of China. Potential partners for the U.S. are South Korea in the East China Sea, Australia, and Singapore in the South China Sea.
In the South China Sea, Washington prefers to keep the status quo, and would not like to see a military buildup by any state, Tsai said.
Vietnam, which ruffles Beijing's feathers by denying China's territorial claim to islands it also claims in the South China Sea, is incapable of taking any military action against China in the next five years, even if it is buying six submarines from Russia, he said.
