Taipei, Sept. 25 (CNA) The president of Japan's Interchange Association arrived Taiwan on Tuesday for a meeting with Foreign Minister Timothy Yang to explain Japan's recent move to nationalize the disputed Diaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea.
Tadashi Imai, president of the association that represents Japan's interest in the absence of diplomatic ties, was also scheduled to discuss with Yang fishing rights in waters near the islands.
Imai 's one-day visit comes amid escalating tensions over the Diaoyutais, a chain of islands that is under Japan’s control but is also claimed by Taiwan and China.
On Sept. 11, Japan bought three of the islands from a private owner, a move that sparked strong protests in Taiwan and China.
In their meeting, Imai and Yang are expected to talk about the purchase, which is seen as an attempt by Japan to tighten its control of the Diaoyutais. They were also scheduled to discuss the right of Taiwanese fishermen to operate in waters near the disputed islands.
In recent years, Taiwanese fishing vessels have been harassed and chased away by Japanese coast guard near the Diaoyutai Islands.
Taiwan and Japan have conducted 16 rounds of talks on the fishing issue but have failed to reach an agreement.
