Uzbekistan Bans Foreign Military Bases

August 30, 2012

Uzbekistan's parliament has approved President Islam Karimov's proposed foreign-policy bill banning foreign military bases in the country and rejecting Tashkent's membership in any military blocs.

Karimov now has to sign the bill into law.

Also on August 30, Uzbekistan's parliament ratified an intergovernmental agreement on the air transit of U.S. cargo and personnel for the purpose of Afghan reconstruction.

In June, Uzbekistan officially suspended its membership in the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) comprising a number of former Soviet republics.

CSTO Secretary Nikolai Bordyuzha said earlier this month that Tashkent's decision to quit the organization "will have negative outcomes for Uzbekistan."

Bordyuzha did not elaborate.
