NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic awarded a $16.5 million contract to W.M. Jordan Co. from Newport News, Va., Aug. 17, for a total renovation and reconfiguration of four bachelor enlisted quarters (BEQs) at Naval Station Norfolk.

According to Richard Rogers, project manager for the renovations, the four buildings were built in the 1940s and are on the Virginia historic register.

"We worked closely with State Historic Preservation Office to maintain the historic character of these buildings," said Rogers. "They are being totally renovated to include up-to-date living conditions for our Sailors."

Rogers said the project was designed in-house as a pilot project for NAVFAC's Building Information Modeling program, utilizing new computer aided design software that incorporates architectural, structural and mechanical designs.

The newly designed interior will effectively be a series of small apartment-style spaces, each complete with a kitchenette and an open floor plan shared by two Sailors. It will replace rooms with up to four beds and community restrooms and showers.

The redesigned facilities will also be more energy efficient once complete. The individual rooms will be heated and cooled with high-efficiency water source heat pumps, with occupancy sensors that will reduce energy usage when the rooms are empty. The outside air serving each room will also be preconditioned, so there will be no issues with humidity in the spaces.

The renovation is expected to be complete in early 2014.
