Pakistani Taliban attack NATO supply trucks, kill driver
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, July 24, IRNA -- Taliban militants in Pakistan’s Khyber agency attacked trucks, carrying supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan, killing one driver, officials and witnesses said.
An official said that two armed men riding on a motorcycle opened fire on a container carrying NATO supplies in Jamrud, a main town in Khyber agency, and killed its driver.
He said that cleaner was wounded in the attack. The gunmen fled after the incident. Officials said that the man killed and injured were Afghan nationals.
It is the first attack since Pakistan unblocked NATO supply line earlier this month after nearly a seven-month closure over a US airstrike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, Ihsanullah Ihsan, said that Taliban will also attack NATO trucks in future.
The attack has once again raised concern about the security of NATO trucks.
NATO contractors had called for security of their vehicles when Pakistan decided to reopen supply line.
The central government says that security of the NATO trucks will be responsibility of provincial governments.
Hardliner religious groups had opposed reopening of NATO supply line and had also organized long-marches and sit-in in the country and also on the main supply routes.
