Readout of Deputy Secretary Carter’s Visit to Thailand

“The deputy secretary of defense traveled to Thailand Sunday where he met with U.S. and Thai officials. The deputy secretary’s decision to travel to Thailand was based on the importance the U.S. places on the Alliance and the need to further strengthen and deepen senior level engagement.

“Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter visited with the Thai Ministry of Defense and thanked Minister of Defense Air Chief Marshall Sukumpol Suwannathat and other military officials for hosting the multi-lateral exercise Cobra Gold, which has been key to enhancing cooperation in the region.

During the visit, he also welcomed the opportunity to discuss ways to enrich Thai-U.S. strategic cooperation to meet shared regional challenges.

“As long-time allies, Thailand and the United States regularly seek ways to increase interoperability, and through continued dialogue, exercises and personnel exchanges. The United States military enjoys a strong operational relationship with the Royal Thai Armed Forces.

“His current trip to Asia will continue with visits to India and the Republic of Korea.”
