JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded an $8 million contract July 13 to Ikhana, LLC, a small business out of North Charleston, S.C., for work to be done at Joint Base Charleston, S.C.

"I am proud to say that NAVFAC Southeast continuously demonstrates its commitment to ensure that maximum opportunity is made for small businesses," said Nelson Smith, NAVFAC Southeast deputy for small business. "Last month, NAVFAC Southeast also awarded a contract in Albany, Ga., to five contractors where two were 8(a) contractors and three were small businesses."

Ikhana, LLC, will be responsible for construction of a new readiness and training facility for the Air Force Reserve Command Red Horse Squadron. The operations and training facility will include classrooms, administrative space, mobility equipment storage, and a vehicle maintenance shop.

"We are proud to be a part of this project as it is our first at Joint Base Charleston," said IKhana President Jeff Davis. "We are an up and coming 8(a) firm that is doing really well competing with other small businesses regarding federal projects."

Smith explained that the maximum practicable utilization of small business concerns is a matter of national interest with both social and economic benefits. America's 27 million small businesses employ more that 58 percent of the private work force, generate more than 51 percent of the nation's gross domestic product, and are the principal source of new jobs.

Work for this project is expected to be completed by October 2013.
