Taipei, July 12 (CNA) The disputed South China Sea region and Tiaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea are international issues rather than cross-Taiwan Strait matters, Mainland Affairs Deputy Minister Liu Te-shun said Thursday.
The Republic of China has full sovereignty over the Tiaoyutai Islands and South China Sea island groups and their surrounding waters, and it is impossible for Taiwan to cooperate with China on such issues, Liu said at a regular council briefing.
Liu said such topics should be seen as international matters rather than cross-strait ones. Limiting the issues to Taiwan and China would "narrow the perspectives for so many things," he said.
Taiwan has cooperated with China in the areas of humanitarian issues and exploration of oil and gas, but will never work with China when it comes to sovereignty concerns, he said.
The Tiaoyutai Islands, which are known as the Diaoyutai Islands in China and the Senkaku Islands in Japan, lie about 100 nautical miles northeast of Taiwan. They are claimed by Taiwan, China and Japan.
