Clinton Arrives In Laos On Landmark Visit

July 11, 2012

Hillary Clinton has arrived in Laos for a brief but historic trip, becoming the first U.S. secretary of state to visit the communist-run country in 57 years.

Clinton was due to discuss issues such as U.S. ordnance left over in Laos from the Vietnam War that ended in 1975, as well as the continuing toxic effects of the defoliant chemical Agent Orange, used by Americans against communist forces.

Another of subject will touch upon a controversial plan by Laos to build a massive dam on the Mekong River, which governments and environmentalists warn could have a devastating effect on millions of people.

She will hold talks with Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith as well as with Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong.
