SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $24.23 million contract, June 25, to Sundt Construction Inc. of Tempe, Ariz., to construct an auxiliary landing field at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma, Ariz.

"This project simulates the landing deck of amphibious assault ships (LHD) in the middle of the desert," said Scott Knutson, NAVFAC Southwest senior Joint Strike Force (JSF) project manager.

"This facility will allow Marine Corps pilots to develop their landing skills and help them gain the required certification that will allow them to land on actual LHDs. This facility will also allow flight deck support crews to train as well," Knutson added.

The project will also include an air operation facility, an aircraft direct fueling station, a maintenance shelter, and a vertical take-off and landing pad at MCAS Yuma.

"This will be first West Coast land-based training facility for Joint Strike Fighter LHD aviators to quickly, safely, and efficiently gain the critical ship landing skills necessary to be an effective sea-base fighting force," said Knutson.

NAVFAC Southwest is the contracting activity.

The project is scheduled for completion by summer 2013.
