RIA Novosti

21:29 22/06/2012 GAZA, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - At least one Palestinian militant was killed and two injured in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza, a spokesperson for the local Health Ministry said.

Israel Defense Forces confirmed it had carried out the the strike, its first since Wednesday, when the Palestinians declared their readiness for a ceasefire. Rocket launches at Israel from Gaza have continued over the last two days, but their intensity has decreased significantly.

The IDF said the target of the air attack was a group of militants preparing to launch rockets. Palestinian media reported the militant who was killed belonged to a Salafi group that is ideologically close to Al-Qaeda and Hamas, which controls Gaza.

On Wednesday evening Hamas militants on behalf of all “Palestinian resistance groups” announced a truce with Israel after three days of intense attacks during which more than a hundred rockets and mortar shells struck southern Israel, triggering retaliatory airstrikes that killed at least nine residents of Gaza.

Over 40 rockets have been launched at Israel from Gaza since midnight on Wednesday when the truce was to take effect. One of the rockets was intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system, the Israeli authorities reported.
