Gaza Militants Fire 9 Missiles Despite Ceasefire - Israel
17:01 21/06/2012 TEL AVIV, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - Palestinian militants in Gaza on Thursday fired at least nine missiles on South Israel despite a ceasefire announced earlier, Israel’s military said.
Hamas, which controls the Palestinian territory of Gaza, announced late on June 20 that its military wing had agreed to a ceasefire with Israel. Hamas pledged to observe the ceasefire as long as Israel did.
The ceasefire announcement came on the heels of a sharp increase in violence between the two countries. More than 75 rockets had been fired into its territory from Gaza in the three days prior to the announcement, according to Israel’s military.
Israel did not immediately respond to the ceasefire announcement.
Nine rockets were fired from Gaza, the majority of which landed in uninhabited territory, an Israeli military spokesman said. "The ninth has been intercepted by the 'Iron Dome' [Israeli missile defense system] over Ashkelon. No one was injured."
