Egypt Election Results Due This Weekend

RIA Novosti

02:32 21/06/2012 CAIRO, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - The official results of Egypt’s presidential elections will be announced on Saturday or Sunday, Supreme Elections Commission (SPEC) chief Hatem Bagato said in an interview broadcast on national television.

“Given that looking into complaints filed to the Supreme Elections Commission by both presidential candidates will take additional time, the official election results… will be announced on Saturday or Sunday,” Bagato said.

The results of the June 16-17 run-off vote were originally planned to be released on Thursday, but the SPEC said in a statement on Wednesday that it needs more time to examine some 400 reports of electoral violations received by the commission.

The two candidates, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohammed Mursi and Ahmed Shafiq, who served as prime minister under ex-President Hosni Mubarak, both claimed victory.

In a preliminary statement on the run-off vote, a group of international monitors headed by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter voiced concerns about the “political and constitutional context” of the elections.

"I am deeply troubled by the undemocratic turn that Egypt's transition has taken," Carter said.

"The dissolution of the democratically-elected parliament and the return of elements of martial law generated uncertainty about the constitutional process before the election," he added.
