Two Militants Killed in Israeli Border Shootout
16:54 18/06/2012 TEL AVIV, June 18 (RIA Novosti) - Israeli border guards killed two militants on Monday morning after a "terrorist cell" infiltrated the Israel-Egypt border, the Haaretz newspaper reported.
An Israeli construction worker building a security fence along the border was also killed in the shootout. Several militants were involved in the attack, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) said.
Israeli communities in the area have been put on alert, and IDF forces are searching for the remaining gunmen.
The militants appeared to have come from Egypt's strife-torn Sinai Peninsula.
The attack followed "days of security warnings," Haaretz added.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak described the incident as a "disturbing deterioration" and said he expected Egypt's incoming president to "take responsibility" for security in the Sina Peninsula.
