Mubarak’s Supporters Call For His Release

RIA Novosti

20:26 11/06/2012 CAIRO, June 11 (RIA Novosti) - Supporters of the former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak who was sentenced to life imprisonment in early June, urge to release him from jail and transfer to the military hospital because of poor health, Egyptian media reported on Monday.

“Mubarak, like any prisoner on his place, must be transferred to the military hospital,” one of his supporters, Mohamed Zahran said, adding that prison hospital does not have necessary medical equipment and professionals who could help the ex-president.

On June 2, the Cairo criminal court sentenced Mubarak to life imprisonment as he was declared guilty of giving the orders to kill protesters during an uprising in January 2011, many of whom were shot dead by security forces.

The ex-president’s supporters blamed the Interior Ministry’s officials of Mubarak’s poor health since as they said he was not provided with necessary treatment. They also reminded that Mubarak’s political opponents, a former presidential candidate Ayman Nour and one of the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, Khairat Ash-Shatir have been previously released from jails over because of health concerns.

Eighty four-year-old Mubarak is serving his term in Tora prison near Cairo.

World’s media reported on Monday that the prison doctors had to use a defibrillator as Mubarak’s heart had stopped twice. The country’s Interior Ministry however dismissed the media reports, saying the ex-president was in “grave, but stable” condition.

The once-powerful leader reportedly suffers numerous diseases, including problems with heart and cancer.
