E-Mails By U.S. Taliban Hostage Express 'Shame' At Being American

June 08, 2012

A U.S. magazine has published e-mails written by an American soldier being held hostage by the Taliban that suggest he was considering deserting the U.S. military even before his capture three years ago.

In e-mails to his parents, Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl said he was disgusted with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and that he was "ashamed to even be American."

Bergdahl, now 26, was taken prisoner by the Taliban on June 30, 2009.

He is at the center of a proposed prisoner swap in which he would be traded for five Taliban members currently held at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Bergdahl's e-mails were published in an article in "Rolling Stone" magazine.
