U.S., India Must Find Ways To Work With Pakistan, Says Panetta

June 06, 2012

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta says the United States and India need to find ways to work with Pakistan.

Speaking in the Indian capital of New Delhi on June 8, Panetta said India and Washington are often at odds with Pakistan, but he said solutions to security questions in South Asia require Pakistani involvement.

Panetta called for all three nations to engage with each other to overcome what he called "often deep differences."

Washington and New Delhi have accused Pakistan of failing to take adequate steps to halt the activities of Islamic militant groups in Afghanistan and parts of India, notably Kashmir.

Panetta welcomed recent moves by India and Pakistan to normalize trade relations as a start to overcoming the problems between the two nuclear-armed neighboring rivals.
