SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded an $18.4 million contract May 11 to Balfour Beatty Construction Co. of San Diego for the design and construction of a dormitory at Travis Air Force Base.

NAVFAC Southwest is the contracting activity.

Balfour Beatty Construction Co. will design, engineer and construct primary and support facilities for the new dormitory. The three-story facility consists of 36 "Dorms-4-Airmen" modules configured to accommodate 144 personnel and will include four individual bedrooms, four individual closets, kitchen area, laundry area, living area, and four individual bathrooms with toilets, lavatories, and showers.

"This project will greatly improve the quality of life for our enlisted Airmen who are fundamental to accomplishing the air mobility command mission at Travis Air Force Base," said Cmdr. Chris Beaubien, NAVFAC Southwest resident officer in charge of construction for Travis Air Force Base. "This is great example of cooperation between the Navy and Air Force services."

Dormitory facilities will include a common area incorporating a common room, public restroom, vending area, postal boxes, mechanical and electrical central space, and telecommunications room.

Demolition of two existing dormitory buildings will make way for supporting facilities. Communications, pavement, site preparation, site improvements, and utilities are included with the construction of the supporting facilities.

The sustainable design rating level for the project designed to be built to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design New Construction (LEED-NC) Silver and the constructed facility shall be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) as having met the USGBC LEED-NC requirements for the required LEED-NC Silver rating level.

A three dimensional building information modeling will be utilized to produce the design documents, one of the first Air Force projects to do so.

Work will be performed in Fairfield, Calif., and is expected to be completed by November 2013.
