Bahrain Warns Iran Against Interference
May 17, 2012
Bahrain has reportedly warned Iran against interfering in its affairs, in the wake of Iranian criticism of a proposed union between Gulf Arab states.
Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmad Al-Khalifa was quoted on May 17 as saying the union -- which officials have said will start with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain -- was "a demand by the people" of the Gulf Arab nations.
Saudi Arabia also has warned Iran against interfering in the project.
Iran's Islamic Propagation Coordination Council, which organizes state-backed protests, earlier this week called on Iranians to protest on May 18 against the planned union.
Tensions between Shi'ite-dominated Iran and Gulf Arab nations have escalated since Saudi Arabia deployed troops to Shi'ite-majority Bahrain to quash an uprising against the Sunni-led regime.
