Attack On Afghan Governor's Compound Leaves 11 Dead

May 17, 2012

Officials in Afghanistan say a group of suicide bombers have attacked a governor's compound in western Afghanistan, and at least 11 people are dead, including the assailants.

Police said one attacker blew himself up at the gate to the governor's compound in Farah province on May 17 before three other attackers armed with automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades subsequently fought their way inside.

Six policemen and one civilian were reported killed and 12 other people were reported wounded in what's been described as a two-hour battle.

Police said the four attackers were all killed.

Government compounds are a common target for militants seeking to topple the regime of U.S.-backed Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
