May 16, 2012

by RFE/RL's Uzbek Service

Sweden’s chief public prosecutor says two Uzbeks arrested for alleged involvement in the attempted assassination of prominent Uzbek cleric will face trial this week.

In comments to RFE/RL's Uzbek Service, Krister Petersson did not give any other details, saying only that the trial would start on May 18.

Imam Obidkhon Qori Nazarov, 50, was shot at least three times in the Swedish town of Stromsund in February and has been in a hospital ever since.

Nazarov has been living in Sweden since he was granted political asylum in 2006.

With tens of thousands of followers and admirers, he is considered one of the most powerful opponents of the regime of Uzbek President Islam Karimov.
