PORTSMOUTH, Va. (NNS) -- The crew of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) conducted phase two of the Crew Certification Process (Crew Cert), May 10.

The certification ensures Truman's crew is prepared to become operational after its docking planned incremental availability (DPIA) maintenance cycle at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) in Portsmouth, Va., which began in February 2011.

"There were no surprises from the Crew Certification Phase II," said Lt. Cmdr. Joyce Nelson, Truman's training officer and a member of the Crew Cert team. "We graded ourselves as hard as-if not harder-than our assessors."

The assessment team, consisting of Truman, Carrier Strike Group 10, Naval Air Force Atlantic (AIRLANT), and the Afloat Training Group reviewed crew level of knowledge examinations, which cover daily shipboard life, such as damage control, medical, watchstanding qualifications, navigation, and operations.

"We have really shifted our priorities from maintenance to training. Our goal is to get our crew fully trained and qualified," said Capt. Craig Clapperton, Truman's executive officer. "We're looking for the assessment team's expertise to help us identify what we need to do to become operational."

To prepare for the coming work-up cycle, Truman's crew has conducted multiple general quarters drills, practiced setting various levels of material condition aboard the ship, and taken damage control and medical readiness level-of-knowledge exams.

"Crew Cert phase two marks a major milestone in getting the ship out of the shipyard," said Cmdr. William Smith, who works at AIRLANT.

Additionally, the ship's training plans and Standard Organization and Regulations Manual were reviewed.

The certification identified strengths and weaknesses, which will be improved upon for Crew Cert Phase III, which is scheduled for June, said Nelson.

"We prepared well for Phase II, and now that we've identified our shortfalls, we can make corrections for Phase III," said Nelson.
