PUERTO BARRIOS, Guatemala (NNS) -- U.S. Navy divers, assigned to Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2, Company 2-1, kicked off the fourth stop of Navy Dive - Southern Partnership Station 2012 (ND-SPS 12) with an opening ceremony in Puerto Barrios, May 9.

While in Guatemala, MDSU 2 and the Guatemalan divers will conduct a series of subject matter expert exchanges, or SMEEs. During these SMEEs, the two countries will exchange knowledge of diving topics such as basic dive medicine, recompression chamber operation, surface-supply diving, and underwater communications.

"So far, this mission has been an invaluable learning experience for the countries we have worked with, as well as for ourselves," said Navy Diver 1st Class Helen Anderson, assigned to MDSU 2, Company 2-1. "Guatemala promises to be the same."

Following the ceremony, the Guatemalan divers hosted a social featuring food, soccer and beach volleyball.

"This mission is not only about diving," said Navy Diver 2nd Class Matthew Kelly, assigned to Company 2-1. "The other part of the mission is to build a partnership between the two countries, and playing sports and sharing the local food is a great way to bring the two cultures together."
