Readout of Secretary Panetta’s Call with the Spanish Minister of Defense


            Press Secretary George Little provided the following readout:

“Today Secretary Panetta spoke with Spanish Minister of Defense Pedro Morenés to discuss a variety of issues of mutual interest. Secretary Panetta made clear his interest in enhancing bilateral defense cooperation with Spain, which he views as a critical ally.”

“Secretary Panetta praised Spanish leadership in global security from Afghanistan, where Spain has invested much effort and made many sacrifices, to counterpiracy operations in the Indian Ocean. The Ministers discussed their shared commitment to building strong, capable, and sustainable Afghan National Security Forces.”

“Secretary Panetta thanked Spain for agreeing to host four Aegis-capable ships at Rota Naval Base that will contribute to NATO Missile Defense, and the Ministers discussed actions needed to finalize the agreement. “

“Secretary Panetta looked forward to welcoming Minister Morenes to Chicago for the NATO Summit on May 20 and 21.”
