SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Maritime Civil Affairs and Security Training (MCAST) Command and role players participated in key leader engagement exercises during Fleet Synthetic Training - Expeditionary (FST-E) 12-1 at Naval Base Coronado from April 23 to May 4.

FST-E is comprised of exercises such as key leader engagements and port security operations designed to give the commands an opportunity to work through possible scenarios faced in their areas of operation overseas. It also lets the commanders know what resources they have available to them while they are deployed.

Key leader engagement training teaches deploying units how to work with the civilian population of a host nation. They learn to work with village leaders and how to react to certain situations.

MCAST's role in FST-E is to simulate a five-man team deploying to a host nation.

"This training is as close as you can get to reality," said Ahmad al-Jabi, a role-player from the San Diego based company, Strategic Operations Inc. "When you go overseas, you're dealing with a new culture and need to know how to deal with the people."

Jabi speaks fluent English, Arabic and Kurdish, and he teaches languages and culture to Navy personnel.

"I think learning the culture is more important than combat," said Jabi, "because once you know the culture, you will know how to react to the people."
