IMMEDIATE RELEASE | April 23, 2012 |
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Media Operations) Navy Capt. John Kirby provided the following readout:
“Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta called Japan Defense Minister Naoki Tanaka today, April 23, to discuss the realignment of U.S. forces in Okinawa and Guam. Panetta said he looked forward to an official announcement in the very near future outlining specifics of the mutually agreed-upon way ahead.
“Both Panetta and Tanaka reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japan Alliance in the defense of Japan and in contributing to regional peace and security, and both expressed their interest on continuing to modernize the alliance by enhancing their already strong security cooperation initiatives.”
