Islamists Turn Popular Rally into Campaign in Cairo
17:50 20/04/2012 CAIRO, April 20 (RIA Novosti) - Friday’s joint rally of about 90 parties and movements in Cairo's Tahrir Square has turned into a campaigning event for the country’s Islamist forces.
Despite the organizers’ commitment to free the event of any ideological topics and “speak in one popular voice” in favor of mutually acceptable demands, several Islamist movements have installed their own platforms and began campaigning.
Islamist campaigners called for the return of candidates excluded from the presidential race and for turning Egypt into an Islamic state.
Several liberal and youth movements left the square in protest.
The rally on Tahrir is continuing, with more Islamist supporters arriving in the area.
