Moscow Urges Pullout of S.Sudan Troops from Border Area

RIA Novosti

17:30 18/04/2012 MOSCOW, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow is concerned by the explosive situation in the border area between Sudan and South Sudan and insists that all South Sudanese troops be pulled out from the Heglig area, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The situation in the Heglig area, occupied by South Sudanese troops, is fraught with new confrontation, the ministry said, adding that hostilities have already resulted in serious losses on both sides.

“In the past three days alone, several hundred people have been killed,” the ministry said.

“Further aggravation of the situation, dangerous both for neighboring countries and the entire region, cannot be allowed.”

South Sudan won independence in 2011 in a referendum that came as part of a peace deal to end decades of civil war. However, fighting still rages in disputed territory along the border with Sudan.

A series of recent tribal clashes in the country are believed to have left some 3,000 people dead.
