USS NITZE, At Sea (NNS) -- Guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze (DDG 94) participated in a passing exercise (PASSEX) with Egyptian Navy corvette ship El Suez (F941), April 6.
"The PASSEX provides an opportunity to strengthen military-to-military relations as well as demonstrate the resolve we share to promote maritime security in this region," said Cmdr. Christopher Nerad, Nitze's commanding officer.
During the PASSEX, Egyptian officers were embarked aboard Nitze to observe, as well as to help communicate with El Suez.
The PASSEX gave each ship the opportunity to guide the other in a series of coordinated division tactical maneuvers.
El Suez steamed alongside Nitze for several hours during the exercise.
"The exercise was tremendously successful and mutually beneficial," said Nerad. "We proved that we can operate together at sea. It was a great learning experience and honor to have an opportunity to work with the Egyptian Navy."
Nitze is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and supporting missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
