Afghan ripples can reach Kashmir: Indian Army
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Srinagar, India, April 17, IRNA -- With new resurgence in Taliban activities, particularly the spectacular attacks on Kabul on Sunday, a top Indian army commander here has said its ‘ripple effects’ on Kashmir cannot be ruled-out.
Addressing reporters on the sidelines of a function here, Lt Gen Syed Atta Hasnain, general officer commanding (GOC) of the 15th corps, said: 'There is no immediate effect at all. There are events which put together can give us certain indicators.
“As of now, there is no such indicator on the situation in Kashmir. But, as I have always maintained attack in one place casts ripple effects on the conditions of the rest, the ripples of recent Taliban attacks will reach Kashmir,” Lt Gen Hasnain said.
Regarding Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah’s discussion on the partial revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) at the Chief Ministers Conference in New Delhi, Hasnain said, “We have spoken our word on the AFSPA and our stand is clear on it.”
Commenting on Omar Abdullah recent statement that AFSPA will go, Hasnain said, “I will comment on it the day it is revoked.”
Commenting on the warnings, militants conveyed through posters in south Kashmir against participating in the ensuing municipal elections, the GOC said that such things have been going on for the last 22 years without any effect in Kashmir.
“There is no big deal in such activities. If the militants have pasted 10 posters I will paste 20 tomorrow with the intention that Kashmiris have never taken the messages seriously,” said Hasnain.
However, not to downplay any complacency on army’s part in maintaining peace and order, Hasnain added, “We are not taking the posters lightly either as attacks have been carried on Panchs and Sarpanchs since the Panchayat elections here. Army and police, being responsible will always strive hard for maintaining conducive atmosphere, particularly during the election times,” he added.
