Mine Clearers Abducted in Afghanistan
16:13 02/04/2012 MOSCOW, April 2 (RIA Novosti) - Three landmine clearers from the British-American humanitarian organization HALO Trust were abducted in the west of Afghanistan, Kabul-based Bahtar news agency reported on Monday.
The agency said that the deminers, whose nationality is unknown, were clearing minefields in the province of Herat, which borders Iran. They were attacked by a group of armed assailants as they were returning from work.
The deminers radioed their headquarters as they were abducted. All contact with them has been lost since then.
The HALO Trust is a non-political, non-religious NGO, registered in Britain as a charity and in the United States as a non-profit organization. HALO specializes in the removal of the hazardous debris of war and has been operating for more than two decades all over the world.
