Boao, Hainan, April 2 (CNA) Republic of China (Taiwan) Vice President-elect Wu Den-yih on Monday gave three conditions for the two sides of the Taiwan Strait to engage in political dialogue.
Wu, speaking to Taiwanese media after taking part in the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia on Hainan Island, said first and foremost is that both sides of the Taiwan Strait accumulate a certain degree of sincerity and goodwill.
The second is a high consensus within Taiwan, Wu said, adding that after the two conditions are met, "we should get the support of the public, especially the support of the Legislature."
He also said that "at present, we still have yet to see a timetable for a high-level exchange of visits across the Taiwan Strait."
Though the Kuomintang won the presidential election Jan. 14, 6.09 million people voted for the opposition party, Wu said, and he voiced his respect for the 6.09 million voters on cross-strait issues, saying that one has to "put oneself in their shoes" during every move.
"There are definitely certain practices that still cause the opposition party to have misgivings," and "this is the reason why something between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait has yet to come to fruition."
He also reaffirmed the "1992 consensus," which the KMT describes as one China, with each side of the Taiwan Strait free to interpret what it means.
On Sunday, prior to the beginning of the Boao Forum, Wu met with Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang, who is expected to take over from Wen Jiabao as premier during the leadership transition next year.
