DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- The Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) International Programs office and the Aegis Training and Readiness Center conducted an Aegis combat system overview training course during the week of March 2.
The training was conducted for the International Programs and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) staff from the Program Executive Office (PEO) of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
"The Aegis PEO training course gave members of the NAVSEA FMS staff an in-depth look into Aegis Combat System functionality and the tools used to train our allies in advanced electronic classrooms," said Dr. Darrell Tatro, director of CSCS International Programs.
The training featured classroom lectures, hands-on Aegis Weapon System (AWS) operations in training laboratories and hands-on demonstrations using training tools such as the Synthetic Combat Operator Trainer (SCOT), Visual Interactive Simulated Training Application (VISTA) and interactive multimedia.
"Many members of my staff execute Aegis programs and to accomplish our objectives we need to understand Aegis," explained Andres Padilla, regional director, International Programs and Foreign Military Sales. "This course provided a strong foundation of knowledge about Aegis Combat Systems."
The hands-on portion of the training was the favorite aspect of the course for Lauren Chapman, PEO International Programs Outreach.
"It was an eye-opening experience to be in the labs," said Chapman. "Learning about the system was essential, but being able to be part of a training scenario was extremely beneficial."
Staff in the CSCS International Programs office have received positive feedback from this training and believe the course is essential to the Navy's mission. Sheryl Wilson, a program analyst for NAVSEA, and one of the six individuals who received their certificates, explained the importance of the training.
"It is important to know the system you are supporting," added Padilla.
The mission of CSCS International Programs is to provide allied forces quality training to enable them to develop ready teams capable of operations that maintain and expertly employ surface combatants. The directorate partners with U.S. training, readiness, and policy organizations, as well as other government agencies and industry to support maritime partnership objectives.
