SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $75 million contract Feb. 28 to four contractors for new construction, repair, renovation, and alteration of fire protection systems at various locations within NAVFAC Southwest area of responsibility (AOR).
A&D Fire Sprinklers Inc. of Santee, Calif., Fed Con/South Bay J.V. of Camarillo, Calif., Southwestern Dakotah Inc. of Tucson, Ariz., and Western Fire Protection Inc. of Poway, Calif. were each awarded a multiple award construction contract (MACC). The contract was competitively bid through Navy Electronic Commerce Online (NECO) website. The four contractors will compete for task orders under the terms and conditions of the awarded contract.
"This contract will provide an acquisition vehicle to NAVFAC Southwest and our customers for fire protection systems design, modification and construction," said Daniel Bridgett, NAVFAC Southwest fire prevention engineer.
Contractors will perform work consisting of design-build or fully designed projects for new construction, repair, renovation and alteration of fire protection systems. Fire protection system construction projects will include additions, alterations, and repair of fire sprinkler systems, fire protection system water supply storage and distribution systems, low and high expansion aqueous fire fighting foam systems, water spray and water mist systems, and fire alarm systems.
"For the past few years we have not had a contract that provides this service directly," said Bridgett. "When we had a need for fire protection construction services, we have been using other MAC contracts and those contractors hired fire protection subcontractors. Now we will be able to access their unique skills directly."
Fire protection system construction projects may also include related components and systems that use special hazard systems such as carbon dioxide and clean agent gaseous systems, kitchen fire suppression systems and dry chemical systems.
"It's important in our efforts supporting the war fighters that we improve the life safety and property protection in our military facilities," said Bridgett. "This contract gives us a tool to do that."
Most of the work will occur in California with some work in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. Work is scheduled for completion by February 2015.
