WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Support Facility (NSF) Carderock, Md. held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of a $13 million administration building March 1.

Previously, Naval Surface Warfare Center employees at NSF Carderock worked in four buildings at various locations on the installation. The completion of the project provides employees office space in a single three-story building and 121 parking spaces were also added.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington finished construction on Building 42 Jan. 27.

The building meets Department of Defense anti-terrorism standards for new buildings and is expected to obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Design elements include a green roof, an innovative heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system and a solar domestic hot water system that can supply 50 gallons of hot water per day. The building is made from 30 percent recycled materials.

Prime contractor Whiting-Turner Construction was awarded the contract Sept. 28, 2010 and work began March 14, 2011.
