Defense minister: Iran backs Lebanese army
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Feb 26, IRNA -- Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said on Sunday that supporting the Lebanese army is among Iran’s strategies as the country should have a powerful army to defend its territorial integrity.
Vahidi made the remarks in a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Fayez Ghosn in Tehran on Sunday.
As a matter of fact, the Lebanese people should be protected in dealing with foreign and domestic threats, said the Iranian minister.
Referring to cultural, historical and religious commonalties between the two countries, Vahidi said Lebanon is manifestation of resistance and patience.
Iran’s principled policy is based on deepening and promoting the security and stability of the region and to powerfully deal with any seditions and violations against the legitimate rights of nations, Vahidi said.
Iran believes that stability and security of Lebanon has direct impacts on the stability of the region, he said.
Resistance in Lebanon belongs to all political and religious groups and the Lebanese army and resistance movement are now acting as two bases of the country's motion towards development and stability, he said.
Referring to pressures exerted by the US and its elements to stir unrest in Syria, he said after some US-backed regimes were eliminated in the region, they now try to weaken the resistance front in Syria against the Zionist regime.
The Lebanese defense minister, for his part, expressed satisfaction with the current round of talks with his Iranian counterpart and also lauded Tehran’s stand on the Lebanese resistance movement and army.
Thanking the stands of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the 33-day war in Lebanon, he said 'The fierce fighting taught us to exercise resistance more than ever.'
Expressing regret over measures taken against the Syrian government, he said these pressures stem from the non-compromise nature of Syria vis-a-vis the Zionist regime.
The Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanon have always backed each other, he said and called for expansion of relations and cooperation between the two countries.
In the event of any stupid action by the Zionist regime to target Lebanon, it will suffer another humiliating defeat, underlined the Lebanese minister.
In the meeting, the two ministers called for expansion of mutual cooperation in dealing with regional challenges.
