Karzai Extends Deadline For Bagram Prison Handover
February 09, 2012
Afghan President Hamid Karzai extended on February 9 a unilateral deadline for the transfer of full control of Bagram Prison to the Afghan authorities.
An earlier deadline for the U.S.-led international coalition to hand over the prison expired on February 5. The deadline has now been extended until March 9.
The Afghan government said it was suspending "all legal and judicial operations" at the prison.
It gave no reasons for the move, but an earlier statement from the office of the president said it was because of "noncooperation by the American side."
The prison, located at Bagram Air Base in Parwan Province, is currently run jointly by U.S. and Afghan authorities.
Karzai's demand that the coalition cede control came after an Afghan commission reported complaints of strip searches and inmates being held in solitary confinement.
