New Pentagon Strategy Sees Shift To Asia
January 05, 2012
U.S. President Barack Obama has unveiled a new strategy for the U.S. military.
The strategy envisions scaling back the size of U.S. ground forces while shifting emphasis to the Asia-Pacific region.
"We’ll be strengthening our presence in the Asia-Pacific, and budget reductions will not come at the expense of that critical region," Obama said.
"We’re going to continue investing in our critical partnerships and alliances, including NATO, which has demonstrated time and again, most recently in Libya, that it’s a force multiplier," he added. "We’re going to stay vigilant, especially in the Middle East."
In a rare appearance in the Pentagon press briefing room, the president announced that the military will be reshaped over time.
The new policy will emphasize counterterrorism, maintaining a nuclear deterrent, and protecting the U.S. homeland.
