USS JEFFERSON CITY, At Sea (NNS) -- Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Jefferson City (SSN 759) departed Manama, Bahrain after a scheduled port visit, Dec. 21.

Crew members participated in recreational and cultural tours sponsored by the Naval Support Activity, Bahrain's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), and familiarization tours of other ships in port.

Sailors participated in cultural tours of the Grand Mosque, rode camels, and shopped at the souq.

Chief Logistics Specialist Miguel Melendez bought Christmas presents for his wife and daughter, and a gift for himself. "I bought a custom made silver ring that has our submarine warfare pin wrapped around it."

In addition to the tours, Sailors had the opportunity to shop for needed items, and use the Internet and phones to communicate with family and friends back home.

The port visit, a second to Bahrain this deployment, provided Sonar Technician 3rd Class Michael Morrison the chance to meet with friends who are stationed in Bahrain and send a Christmas present to his little brother.

A number of Jefferson City Sailors used the time ashore to work out at the NSA Bahrain gym. The ability to use the treadmills, elliptical machines, and free weights was an added bonus for the crew that has limited space on the submarine for gym equipment.

Cmdr. Brien Dickson, commanding officer of Jefferson City was thankful to NSA Bahrain for the services available for his crew to enjoy during time off.

"The Jefferson City crew and support teams have been hard at work to ensure the ship is ready to continue our mission," said Dickson.

While in port, the submariners visited other ships pierside, including mine counter-measure ships and patrol boats.

Jefferson City is assigned to Commander, Task Force 54, which commands U.S. submarine forces and coordinates theater-wide anti-submarine warfare in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
