ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The aviation fuel division of USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) began integrating with 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Marines Nov. 29, as Iwo Jima Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG) participated in a composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX).
During the three-week training cycle, Iwo Jima Air department worked with Marines to deploy and land Navy and Marine Corps aircraft.
The fuels division is responsible for fueling more than 80 aircraft and 20 vehicles aboard the ship. On average, the Sailor and Marine duo handles 60,000 gallons of jet fuel daily.
"The integration of the blue and green team increases our overall flexibility," said Chief Warrant Officer Christopher Smith, USS Iwo Jima Fuel Boatswain. "Eventually, we will be able to implement 24-hour fuel operations for deployment."
With the help of the Marines, fuels division has doubled the number of fueling crews on board Iwo Jima.
"The integration gives [Sailors and Marines] the opportunity to learn about the customs of both branches of the military," said Smith. "They are able to train and learn from each other."
Working on the flight deck has been a new experience for many of the Marines.
"They have walked us through every step it takes to make sure we are safe on the flight deck while refueling," said Sgt. Kenny Wilhite, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 261. "By working with the Navy we get the chance to work everyday to better our skills under each aircraft in a unique environment."
The Iwo Jima Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG) is currently underway conducting COMPTUEX in preparation for an upcoming deployment in Spring 2012.
