Transdnestr presidential election heads for run-off
17:23 14/12/2011 TIRASPOL, December 14 (RIA Novosti) - Presidential elections in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transdnestr are set for a second round run-off after early results showed no candidate would win more than 50 percent of the vote.
Ex-parliament speaker Yevgeny Shevchuk leads Supreme Council speaker Anatoly Kaminsky by 38.5 percent to 26.5 percent.
Current Transdnestr leader Igor Smirnov has garnered 24.8 percent of the vote.
The Russian-speaking region gained de facto independence from Moldova in 1992. It is seeking full independence but Moldova says it is only prepared to allow autonomy.
